It looks nice, but you have to do something on the wood-texture. The specularity seems to high, normal wood (as used in the middle age) wouldn't reflect the light that high unless the wood is polished or very wet.
Other than that the picture has a nice mood.

hmm, does look nice, and i agree the gloss is a little high, but that could be down to many years of spilled grog...
...but then, don't those tables end up smashed every weekend in the obligatory barfight?

It looks great but the shadow from the sword is bugging me. It looks like it's floating above the table. Other than that I like it :D

I like it, it has a nice mood (which is always most important, imho)
It seems that the table needs less specularity and the sword more... But that may just be individual taste speaking.
It's nice!

Shine that old, out of use sword, and someone may hire it :D
Dull out that table before someone carves "Kai luvs McDonalds" onto it. :p
Oh, and turn the shadowing on :)

Yup, and you might want to roughen the woodgrain, as well. The way it is now, it looks more like vinyl than wood...

Turn on shadow casting... The sword appears to be hovering above the table without it.

It looks like you're using mapped shadows. Turn the sharpness to at least medium, maybe even to high. Put one point light at every flame location (if you haven't already)
Kai
May 29th, 2002, 11:14 AM
found the prob there
each flame is an array.. but the lower lights somehow got the shadows turned off... fixing that.. atm the main shadow maps are running at about 1024 setting.. but with the lower lights not casting.. cancels it out.....
should have the fix up in a bit
thanks guys :)

I think the render time for THIS scene is long enough... :D
Kai
May 30th, 2002, 02:45 PM
ok not really an update but...
here's the scene in a larger format - needed to see where work is needed other than the walls and some table details
1280 res, x4 AA, Raycast, High Setting.
Rendertime 8 hours, 22 minutes

been a little bit cos I've been having some probs with this.. first the scroll I wanted to use won't work cos of a shaderlab glitch.. and then I hit the 3 point killer with the wine bottle (1: Multiple Light Sources, 2: Glass 3: Raytracing)... but finally I'm getting somewhere....
added the first of the background figures....

After the gloss on the wood, which made it look like it was covered in about an inch of woodfinish, and the addition of the shadow to the sword to make it look like it is not magicaly floating above the table, the image looks really good. It is really nice indeed! Now tell me, is that some sort of magical energy swirling around in the spherical end of that hilt? Heh :D
Kai
June 24th, 2002, 10:53 PM

Prox... thats a temporary stool I nicked from another scene ;) doing a proper one 2nite...

Not looking too shabby m8.
I guess the render time on this is gonna probably move to the day timescale soon..
But keep going, when we have the wee nipper running around with a pint pot in his hand the better :D

OOH boy! Trouble is 'brewing'? :: Says slowly and stupidly like Dr. Evil, then chuckles like him, looking to Mini Zanith ::
So yes, Kai, show off this energy! Heh Heh. What does it do? :: Leans forward, cupping hand around right ear ::

February 7th, 2003, 06:30 PM
whoa, dude o.o that ROCKS...
i'd suggest trying a render in 16:9 though.. closer to the aspect ratio of human vision... maybe even 2.35:1
also... depth of field doable?

I miss the sexy chick in the background... but otherwise this is really exceptional work, Khai :DDD
Well done!!

I guess in those days you had to build your house one wall at a time, eh?
I would agree that some DoF effect would be nice, to lend a bit of soft focus to the figures. Alternatively, you could try to increase the amount of detail in their clothing - I just think that the lower detail in the figures looks out of place with the higher detail of the foreground.
Kai
February 16th, 2003, 02:42 PM
gah.. took 3 days of tests to get the DOF to work lol
nearly done now.. just a stool and a few details....

Oooooh... hazy... :D
Much better Kai, but you might still think about getting some more texture on those characters in the background. :)
JasonA
February 16th, 2003, 03:30 PM
Seems like with the DOF there might not be alot of point to added detail in the background character, dont you think? well if the focus comes back, then you might want too:P
On thing about that character in the background I noticed, seems like his sleeve has some sort of wierd bulge going on close to the wrist...Also, its not clear what he's doing. Ie is he banging the table or are you gonna put a cup in his hand...? Maybe it should be in a more relaxed pose, like just resting on the table or something

keep it up, doesn't look like too much longer and it will be finished
Dano-San
February 16th, 2003, 07:13 PM
JasonA: the depth of field is there cos it's a first person image, and the guy who's eyes we're looking from is focussing on his sword, and not the rest of the bar (as the sword is the main focus of the image)
i agree about his arm though... i think that bulge is just a rogue shadow but it is a bit disconcerting, and i also think that his hand should be open, as if reaching for a beer from the waitress ^_^ he looks a bit like he's making a rude gesture to her at the minute ^^;
JasonA
February 16th, 2003, 09:58 PM
Dano, sorry I think I wasn't clear in my post. I understand why the DOF is in the scene, the point I was making was about having higher detail on the character in the background. Not much point in that because the DOF effect would nulify added details :)
I agree about the rogue shadow, not sure how that got in there... ?
