It's been a while since I posted anything here, shame on me. Don't want you guys to think ill of me so here's a little bit of what I've been doing.
All the detail is modeled, no mapping. I am about a third of the way done with the secondary engineering ring so the detail there is not raised yet. Anyway hope you enjoy it.

Okay, the final update for this weekend. I am completely done with the secondary hull ring now and have started the secondary hull itself. I am pleasently surprised at how well the radiosity shot turned out. It's starting to show. :D

I found some time to work on it this afternoon. Completely rebuilt the deflector dish and ribs and got a decent start on the secondary hull proper. It stands at about 16,400 polys now.

This is just a small update but an important one. I decided to tackle the fantail next since it is always one of the most difficult parts for me. The hanger opening is done and now for the bottom and edges.
I also found a better method for cutting the plates in which is not visible here but results in three things:
1. Fewer Polys - where they defintely are not needed
2. Less poly streching ti deal with
3. An overall better render when it's time.
I ran a few tests to be sure and it's worth the extra effort.

Time for an update. Decided to start dumping it to a schem view to for better viewing. Had intended more of an update for this one, but with other duties and spending too much time on the Arboretum interior this is where I got.
The bottom left modeler views shows the detail for the Arboretum windows and lower phasers. Those Arboretum windows have a tendancy to create an opticle illusion making them look skewed, but thay are level.
The bottom right modeler views shows the inner skin. I plan on adding not only the arboretum interior but misc rooms as well to add a higher sense of detail and realism.
So far she's 21,840 polys. Not as bad as I expected for this point in the model. The secondary hull panels have not been raised for detail. I will do that when the all the stencil work is done.

It's been a while and I know this isn't much of an update but I wanted to figure out how to handle the nomenclature. I've handled it in such a way the she can be labeled as any ship of the class. The two insets of the airlock show that it's seamless.
I have redone the airlock four times and it's still problematic but I figured out how to solve it with the next update.
Cheers for now.

Loking great. My only question is how accurate is your paneling to that on the actual model? Yours looks bigger and more random, with more rectangular shapes than I remember on the original.
Cobra
October 15th, 2002, 12:58 PM
You are right, I chose to follow FI more closely on the paneling and yet on other details I have chosen the actual model. Part of the reason for choosing the FI model on the paneling was easier access to ortho views and cleaner reference. On all of the real model reference I have, and I think I have just about all of it, the paneling would have been near impossible to follow. But for the details even with all of the angle's and lack of ortho veiws I am able to find ways to be very acurate.
In the long run it'll be accurate to the exception of the hull paneling and only the paneling on the lower two thirds will be off. Everything from the Nacelle mount area and on I have enough reference to be pretty darn close.
;)

October 15th, 2002, 01:04 PM
In that case, I'd suggest calling it something other than Enterprise to keep the nitpickers at bay. ;)
As for the Ortho views of the FI mesh, mind posting them? I didn't even know such renders existed.

I'd say, screw the nitpickers. FI didn't change the name just because thier paneling isn't a 100% perfect match for the physical model. :):z:

seanr reminded me that I haven't done an update on this for some time, thanks mate.
:o Uhm sorry, running LWG and life don't leave me as much time for getting around as I used to do.
Anyway, here's an update of where it's at so far along with an animation test of the shuttle bay doors. The hull is not 100% complete and neither are the pylons. This is just where I am at with the paneling and detailing to date. The animation test is prior to the renders so it doesn’t match exactly which is ok it was only meant to test the doors.

Not to fear, the pylons are a tad bit long but not in a way that matters. I simply extended the very ends a little beyond reference so I have plenty to work with when I get to that end of things. There are some really wierd things that happen where they meet the nacelles and I just want to make sure I don't have too little material to work with.

Actually, I cannot believe how many set backs I've had in the CG field recently. The very cool project over at Complex Minds fell through when the person in charge died in a car wreck around Christmas time. The project has since disolved into the ether. The company still would like me to "donate" my meshes and my time. Unfortunaely, I am very disillusioned with their work and work ethic.
I heard last month that Zoic was looking for modlers around Christmas time. I'm seriously considering putting together a new demo reel and sending them a copy. If you know of anyone looking for a full time modeler, please let me know.
I'm still doing work for the Blade Runner fan film. The second trailer will be out in a bit. And the magazine "Online Entertainment" has done an article on our project. The project was delayed a few months. The director has had a rough year. His brother passed away in January, and about three weeks ago a very close friend of his passed away. The project is still very much alive and well, and we are going to be shooting again in a few weeks. The spinner set is currently on hold (in pieces I should say) because we no longer have a location to build sets, but will find another one in a matter of weeks.
