I started working on (yet) another starship model. This is the nurb cage, right before I froze it.

The Charlie's still around.....

Hrm . . . The looks very interesting, she is not Charleston, but I am sure she will be another fine design to add the the scoreboard.

I would be interested in seeing what the purpose of the 'wing' going through the warp nacelle is. Also, do you stop the pylon structure on the connection point of the pylon and the nacelle then have a seperate structure for the 'wing' on the other side or does it carry all the way through the warp nacelle structure?

PepeWan
September 5th, 2002, 11:13 AM
Purpose? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......the wingtip is a good place for RCS thrusters, and possibly another phaser bank. And the wings' leading edges have warp sustainers/stabilizers/makebetters. Or something.

Real world? I just thought it looked kinda cool, since (from the front) it sort of reminds me of the F4 Phantom.

And I would guess that's two separate structures.

Dude! Nice to see you're back in action!

Love the new design man. Can't wait to see it finished. :)

Back in the day, before Equinox when they had published the pre-Enterprise-E design and called in Nova class, we always speculated the blades running off the nacelles were a kind of soliton waveguide generator... A new kind of warp travel that didn't hurt subspace.

:yikes:

PepeWan
September 10th, 2002, 09:53 AM
Zanith, you're absolutely right. I either need to squish it some more or just make up a new texture (which would probably be a smart thing to do anyway).

Zanith
September 10th, 2002, 11:12 AM
Just take the image, expand the canvas of the image to twice the height of the original, and past a second copy of the image beneath it, making one longer, seemless texture. Then, make the canvas back to its' original size and I think you will be fine. Heh.

PepeWan
September 10th, 2002, 11:23 AM
Or, I could just squish the Y-height of the texture--since the texture is set to repeat, it'll show more grooves.

Zanith
September 10th, 2002, 12:19 PM

Beauty. Any chance that you'll share the techniques behind the creation of all these little panels? I think I know, but I'm sure others don't....

Zanith
October 8th, 2002, 12:10 PM
Question -

1. What is the point behind the semi-transparent dome at the top of the beridge. Is it something potentially for the crew to look up and see out of?

Also, I must say - nice job on the door. Heh Heh.

PepeWan
October 8th, 2002, 04:07 PM
That would be a lozenge. For Tin Man. Because he's feeling a little hoarse.

That, or it's a sensor dome.

The panels: I use a background object to cut the pattern into the hull. Then I use Vertibevel to raise and bevel the panel.

seanr
October 8th, 2002, 04:12 PM
That technique has served you well. I think that's the most perfectly subtle style of plating I've ever seen.

PepeWan
October 8th, 2002, 07:39 PM
Cool, Thanks!

Zanith
October 9th, 2002, 03:00 AM
I think it is a style I think we will see others try to mimic in the future. And that is the best compliment . . . Even if sometimes it is plagerism. LOL!

PepeWan
October 9th, 2002, 08:17 AM
Well, I think plenty of other people have done the same kind of thing. I'm not exactly an innovater here.

seanr
October 24th, 2002, 05:59 PM
I don't like the style you chose for the ends of the phaser emiters even though I know it's canon - it just looks wierd to me. Maybe model sme greebles over the points or something. Also, I think you could use a bit of piping in the sensor arrays. The little blocks are too monotonous. Everything else looks awesome, though. I especially like the way you designed the deflector area - friggin perfect!

Rustedborg
October 28th, 2002, 01:34 PM
I for one love this little ship. I hope you keep posting WIP images here until you're satisfied with it.

Very nice! :D

I am noticing, however, that the deck plating on the top/dorsal side of the saucer section doesn't look as good as the plating on the bottom.

I think the dorsal plating needs a few more sections/divisions.

Oh, BTW, I absolutely LOVE those nacelles and pylons! Excellent work!

Could you please do me a favor and post this on http://forums.scifi-meshes.com so I can add it to the 'featured threads' header? This fooking rocks!

I remember seeing your horizontal engineering set right after I started planning out the engineering section for this thing. Perfect Timing.

The only thought I've had for the bridge is the MSD: directly behind the captain/tactical, freestanding, transparent, reconfigurable to tactical display, serves as divider between main bridge and conference area (a la NX-01/Defiant). I'm not saying it's a good idea, I'm just saying it's an idea.

In the episode "Parallels"... in the alternate reality where Wesley Crusher was the tactical officer. (now why wasn't that the alternate Enterprise that blew up? :D)

It was basically a big glass wall right between Tactical and the aft wall stations with some static Okudagrams of the ship and stuff frosted onto it.

Schematic view? What schematic view?? I wanna see it!

Okay, I figure I'm courting a tank of napalm by saying this, but... *deep breath* here goes.

There is a school of thought in Trek Ship design that basically seems to say that if you throw a saucer, a sausage and a pair of warp nacelles together in whatever configuration you can call it a starship. Maybe one time in a thousand, that'll actually work - but far too many times, even in canon designs, there's not enough thought given to what's inside as well as what's out. They look more like collections of spare parts than planned vessels.

I guess that's one of the things that really attracts me about this little ship. It *flows*. All of the pieces are there - and they all fit together so well. It's a joy to look at. What's more, it fits into the universe so well, you'd think it *was* a canon design. I'm gonna have to add this design to my shortlist of favourites. It's beautiful. ^_^

All of this is just my opinion, of course, but there it is.

Please, keep up the great work, Pepe!

Fellow modelers, excuse me for saying, but this IS really the most beautiful mesh I have ever seen. Details/textures/glow really are in a good balance. Perfect!!!

I'm too new to this to say it's the /most/ beautiful that I've ever seen, but it's sure as snot in the top ten. I would cheerfully kill to be able to do work of this caliber, both in terms of te design itself, and in terms of the execution. Maybe if I hang out here long enough and ask enough stupid questions I can at least get to the stage where I don't embarrass myself tho.

Speaking of stupid questions, I found the beautiful five view shematic render that was mentioned. Oddly enough, it was cleverly hidden under that link that said 'schematic'. Silly me. ^^;;

My hat is off to you, Pepe, sir. You succeeded brilliantly. Cheers!

That five-view would make an excellent poster on its own!

This is an amazing ship!
Seems to me that the look and feel are much more "canon" than the Norway and Sabre classes, for example.
Nice work!

now that looks awesome. Looking forward to the texturing that you do on that. My textures still don't seem to come out right yet. But your model is great looking so far.

Render On!

Well, I'm as impressed today as I was two and a half years ago. I've been thinking about doing some modeling again, maybe now would be a good time for me to start that engineering set. ;)
