Frankly I find the series dissapointing. Somehow SciFi producers miss the right balance of violence to story that make it worth watching instead of boring.

you have to remember, they just picked up what orriginaly aired on (if I remember right) NBC about 2 or three years ago. So it was originaly aired for public TV, and no new shows being made.

Truth be known, I like the show. It is gritty, good special affects, though I think I would like to see how they have the Terraforming as with so many habitable planets. Of course, would really make for a lousy show without diffrent planets for a space show.

I have been recording the episodes off of the Sci Fi channel but missed a few. I like the show and loved the movie. I would definitely watch a second season. The characters developed a chemistry just in that one season that takes longer for most other shows.

Well, technically it was cancelled 2 years ago by FOX, Sci Fi was airing all the episodes that had been produced leading into the release of Serenity. But there are only 14 episodes total, so you run out right quick.

Heading into the black.... big damn hero.

The tv series was good, just never given a chance for it to catch on with the average viewer. If they would have gone into a second season i'm sure that it would have earned good ratings for the network.

It seems the realy good shows never get a decent shot, if you dont hook the viewers in a couple of shows your history. A series like firefly grows on you episode by episode, just keeps getting better with age, like a good wine.

I'm a big fan of Serenity (movie) and Firefly(TV show). I noted that some find the TV series less enjoyable because it not got enough, or too much, violence. The new Battlestar Galactica has too much sex, graphic violence and torture for my tastes. I think Joss Whedon and the team on Firefly found just enough. Joss said during an interview that he wanted to tell the stories of a Han Solo like smuggler, during the time he WASN'T saving the galaxy. The characters are all believable and well rounded, and the effects were pretty good for the time they were produced.

As to the reason it was cancelled: the problem was that FOX wanted an instant hit. They never gave the series a chance. They wanted to change Joss's vision of the show, he asked them not to pick up the series, they did anyway, and then they canelled it... What a waste. At least Serenity did not completely bomb at the box office. Many people I've spoken to liked it more than the series. But the movie never tackled any serious moral issues. That's one thing I liked about the TV series. It makes you think.

I've even moved into playing the Serenity RPG. It allows you to play in that world and explore new ideas.

In my opinon it's worth it.

The basic plot:
The basic plot of the TV series is this...

Here's how it is. Earth-that-was had become too small and polluted to sustain the human race. We moved out -- terraformed and colonized hundreds of new earths; some, rich and flush with the new technologies; some, not so much. The central planets -- them as formed the Alliance -- decided all the planets had to join under their rule.

There was some disagreement on that point.

After the Unification War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of civilization, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggle to get by with the most basic of technologies. A ship will bring you work; a gun will help you keep it.

A captain's goal is simple: find crew, find a job... keep flying.

The crew
Some minor spoilers listed below.

Malcolm Reynolds holds the duty as Captain - he is a defeated soldier who opposed the unification of the planets by the Alliance-- to no avail. Striving to be normal, he must keep all his crew members on task, and have Serenity flying safely. Malcom is a tall, broad chested man with short brown hair, blue eyes, and typically heroic good looks, which hide apersonality with many depths. He would do anything to ensure the safety of his crew/family--even die.

Zoe (aka The Soldier) is extremely loyal to Reynolds as she served with him during the war and owes her life to him. Zoe has the strength and experience to take command of the ship, if necessary. The only other survivor of Malcolm Reynolds' platoon, Zoe joined him as Serenity's first mate to kick a little ass around the universe. And after a hard day committing mayhem wherever possible/necessary, she gets to come home to her husband Wash, Serenity's pilot.

Wash, her husband, is the pilot of the ship, and is unassuming, self-deprecating and calm with a sense of humour. he's very laid back and loves to wear Hawaiian shirts. He's a superior pilot and a bit of a daredevil when things get tight.

Inara the "Ambassador" is a highly regarded registered Companion (read: courtesan), and the most respectable person aboard Serenity. No one seems to know what such a high-priced working girl is doing on the very low class Serenity, least of all Malcolm Reynolds. She's elegant, educated, and beautiful. She maintains her own space - a shuttle on the ship - and only has the high class and decent clientele. Prostitution (or at least licensed prostitution) is legal on almost all planets thanks to the influence of The Guild.

Jayne the Mercenary is the tough, not very bright, ultimately loyal, and inevitably unpleasant. Jayne works for whoever pays him the best. At the moment, that's Mal, so that's where Jayne's loyalty lies -- until something better comes along. He's a lean, mean fighting machine -- unfortunately, his skill with weapons doesn't translate well to situations not involving money or violence.

Kaylee, The mechanic of the ship is the experienced engineer. Cheerful, energetic Kaylee is Serenity's ace mechanic, a tomboy who accepts anything the universe throws at her with a smile and a bounce. Trained by her father, she's a natural mechanic, which got her the job on the Firefly Transport ship Serenity despite her total lack of experience with either that model of ship or a Trace Compression Block engine. At the same time, she can be flummoxed by particularly difficult problems ("Sometimes, a thing gets broke, it can't *be* fixed.") or by someone like Simon, the doctor who she has a gigantic crush on.

Simon is the doctor on Serenity and comes from a wealthy family and has a privileged upbringing. He is a highly trained physician who's a little bashful and uptight around women. He and Jayne are often at odds, since Jayne would rather turn them in tothe authorities than continue flying wit them. He would do anything to protect his sister.

River, his sister, (aka The Fugitive) A hyper-intelligent child of privilege, River found the Academy she was sent to to be more of a torture center than a school. No one knows yet what The Academy did to her before her brother Simon stole her back, because she's still too traumatized to tell them. The scientist at the facility experiemented on her.

Book or "The Shepherd", an old and wise priest. He is a mystery. No one knows exactly who he is or what he did before entering the monestary, but we have been able to determine that he was a man of some importance, with skills akin to soldier or spy. He is very well-read and learned. He's truly doing his best to be a man of god, but every once in a while something else slips through.
