I have heard about this, I think it's official because I saw this on STARTREK.com.

You mean the same STARTREK.com that said the new movie was going to be a TOS movie with no official word or support from Paramount?

I like these updates. Maybe it's blasphemy, but I think it's good to update the special effects to today's standards but they keep the original shapes and starship movement/angles. It is a nice homage to TOS.
