when i model a ship, usually i run out of ideas on how to detail part of it. lots of times this part gets left blank or something. it's usually a flat part on the back or bottom. windows won't work and i don't know what to put there. any of you guys have the same problem? what do you do?

sounds like a good place for a nameplate.
Or an emblem, such as Federation symbol or
United states flag , lots of options.
Or if unseen , put your name "model by XXX".

Sensor arrays, cargo doors (as on the Enteprise D), warp core ejection port, landing leg doors, windows (ever seen a glass-bottomed boat?), etc., etc. The possibilities are endless - just use canon ships as a reference for stuff like that, and you'll have no shortage of ideas.
Or if unseen , put your name "model by XXX".
Good way to prevent mesh theft, but doesn't work in kitbash cases when they only use a few parts. http://www.3dgladiators.com/forums/ubb/ubbhtml/smilies/rolleyes.gif
