The Ballard of Mary Lou
By Chris 'Kai' Miller
For my love Amanda
with thanks to Dano-San for being a friend, Lisa Piper for giving me a place to heal and to all the friends that have given me ideas over the years.
15 Years in the Making - and Finally I have ti all worked out...
'Late in the 20 century man started to notice that his home, Earth, was starting to show it's burden. Fossil Fuels, laid down in prehistoric times were beginning to run low and with the changing of the weather patterns, he started to make small faltering steps to the stars. First stop was the Moon, but with the short sightedness of the politicans and accountants this prize was neglected for many many years and spacetravel was left to the dreamers and robot space probes. '
'Early in the 21 century events on Earth took a dramatic change. Conflict in the area known as the 'Middle East' worsened and then finally plunged into war. This reached it's climax in an exchange of chemical, biological and thermonuclear weapons. In the aftermath, the rich oil deposits that much of the rest of the Earth depended on were rendered inaccessible for thousands of years to come..'
'With the loss of these vital supplies the other countries of the world were thrown into panic. What other Oil deposits left would not be enough to fuel the insaitiable demand for gasoline, diesel oil and plastics for the advanced human race. As the situtaion grew more desperate, a new power block emerged into the world stage. The Nordic States, Norway Sweden and the closest countries banded together with the discovery of Fusion poer around 2015 by their scientists..'
'The once powerful US fell by the wayside as the Nordice States through the methods of politics, power embargoes and military means, reformed the worlds economy. Far from being a cruel dictatorship, the NS proved to be a far reaching power for good, if shortsighted at times..'
'Funding a revitalised space program from the once all powerful seat of NASA, great inroads into the solar system were made. With the invention of the Miller Davies DD Drive in 2030, cheap, effective intersystem travel was at last in the hands of the human race. Later the disscovery of the StutterWarp drive by Myhill & Reid opened the paths to the Stars..'
'Except from "Our Race, Our Stars" by Cj Mullins 2105'
Chapter One
The Storm Gathers
'It's quiet in high Earth orbit. The Vacuum of space provides all the sound inulsation a music studio could ever need, Except for the senstive 'ears' of Emissions Lab 479 that is. Above the ever present hiss and crackle of Hydrogen, there are many sounds carried over the medium of radio. The distant 'snap snap snap' of a Pulsar, moving up the the range, the buzz of commerce. The movement of information as constant as the buzz of hydrogen. Towards the high end of the ragne, the cryptic bursts of noise marking Military communiques. Once every 60 seconds all the was scanned, recieved, recorded, boosted and directed by the labs equipment. ...'

'..we british will never outdo the Americans when it comes to volume killing. but for sheer perversity there's something about our murders that makes us unique. As a nation we do murder rather well.'

If you had the time to lose
An open mind and time to choose
Would you care to take a look
Or can you read me like a book?
